NAME: James Potter
FANDOM: Harry Potter
POINT IN CANON: post-death
AGE/BIRTHDATE: 21/March 27, 1960
ALIGNMENT: Good. He's stood up to evil before in facing down what he considers to be the most wicked man to ever live. He'll certainly do it again to protect everyone, but particularly those he loves.

APPEARANCE:
PERSONALITY:

BACKGROUND: Born the only child of two wealthy, older parents, James Potter lived a very charmed early life. His wishes were catered to a little though his parents strived to teach him honest values. He became a little arrogant and idealistic, and he honestly couldn't imagine why anyone would try to go to a House other than Gryffindor. His Dad had been a Gryffindor, and James wanted to grow up to be like him. It was especially baffling to the Gryffindor lover that anyone would willingly go to Slytherin, as to James it was like casting yourself in the losing villain's role from the start.

He looked forward to going off to school a great deal. His father was always telling him one tale or another about his days at Hogwarts, how his brave classmates had done such extraordinary things. The act of actually going off to school was hard, because he missed his parents, but he was fortunate enough to quickly find three fast friends: Sirius Black, who would become his best friend, Remus Lupin, the pale boy who James wanted to help even before he could put his finger on Lupin's malady, and Peter Pettigrew, the tag along who James included in their number even though he couldn't imagine why. The three became very close and soon began to refer to themselves as Marauders. He immersed himself in everything at Hogwarts from House rivalries to Quidditch (where he became an excellent Chaser) to eking by at his studies. His grades were never low enough to earn him the disdain of his professors, but James was a somewhat lazy student. He didn't go all out for a subject unless it interested him.

It was also at Hogwarts that James met the love of his life, Lily Evans. She seemed beautiful with her red hair and green eyes. James was a bit put out that she was such close friends with Severus Snape, because Snape was a Slytherin, withdrawn and clearly trouble, but he didn't hold it against her. No, James Potter took his mischief out on Snape, choosing to play every dirty trick in the book on the boy. Sometimes the pranks were warranted, sometimes they were an act of retaliation, but more often than not they were just cruel jokes. Rather than impressing Lily, these immature acts seemed to drive her further away, which baffled James.

The only person more immature than James, it seemed, was Sirius. The boy who James' own parents had taken in loved the pranks even more than he did. After they all worked very hard to learn to produce illegal Animagus forms so that they could keep Remus company during his transformations, Sirius tricked Snape into going down to the Shrieking Shack during one of Remus's transformations. Despite the fact that it was quite dangerous and that he was at risk of losing his own life, James saved Snape. Because of this, Snape owed him a life debt, even if the Slytherin thought that Potter's motives were self serving.

Though the rift between Snape and Potter never really mended, James eventually forgave Sirius for his mistake, and with time Peter and Remus did too. In his seventh year he was named as Head Boy even though he didn't serve as a prefect. It was a sign of what everyone was noticing—James Potter had grown up. He was much more mature, dedicated, driven, and better at controlling his impulses. That newfound attitude was responsible for finally getting him a date with Lily Evans, and from there James was almost helpless. He could not stop himself from liking the pretty redhead more and more every day, and eventually falling in love with her. Soon after their graduation they married, and Sirius Black, the man who he had come to consider as a brother over the years, stood as his best man.

Shortly before graduation and thereafter, James was met with the challenge of deciding what to do with his life, but there was never really much of a choice at all. James knew what the right thing to do was, and there wasn't really any negotiation as to which course he would take. He joined the Order of the Phoenix, and he and Lily went on to defy Voldemort, the most powerful dark wizard in ages three times. James was grown up, but he wasn't old yet, and he was still young enough to think himself invincible. He met the danger head on, fearlessly.

Until his son was born. Harry James Potter was born July 31, 1980, and that was the day his father fully grew up as well. Things became impossibly more conflicted, because while James wanted to keep his wife and child safe, he also knew that if he didn't stand up and fight the evil man with a few brave others, there would be nowhere safe in the world for the little boy who looked so much like him. So he fought until the danger to himself and his family became so immediate that he had no choice but to hide.

Respectfully declining Dumbledore's offer to act as secret keeper, James chose his best friend Sirius Black instead. However, Sirius had a plan, one of his schemes to fake out the Death Eaters. Peter Pettigrew became the Secret Keeper, because everyone knew that no one would suspect the more mild mannered boy. The mistake of trusting Pettigrew would cost him dearly. On October 31, 1981, James heard a crash and sent his wife and child running. He knew that he didn't have any hope of holding Voldemort off for long, his wand was in another room where he had been using it to entertain Harry, but he was going to use his last moments to try to buy Lily and Harry the time they needed to escape. The killing curse came quickly, painlessly, and he feared too soon to buy his family an escape.
